A
Functional Approach to Harmonic Style and Analysis
-
A Functional
Approach to Harmonic Style and Analysis is a complete course in harmony
that follows the method most widely used in German speaking countries today,
the "Funktionslehre", a system which relates all chords - no matter how
complex - back to the primary triads. At the same time this course
will develop an awareness in the student for harmonic style, from the latter
part of the 17th Century to the early 20th Century.
-
Part One
is devoted to the primary triads in four part harmony, while Part Two builds
on the knowledge acquired, introducing the secondary triads, sequential
harmony and chromaticism. Part Three deals systematically with the
many forms of modulation, taking the student to the very borders of tonality.
Part Four concludes with a detailed discussion of Debussy's approach to
harmony.
-
The course
is laid out in two volumes, Volume I containing the text and Volume II
containing all the examples, supplementary exercises and, where appropriate,
passages for analysis.
-
Although
the first chapters contain very elementary information, it is recommended
that the more advanced students also read through these chapters, in order
to gain an understanding of the basic principles of the "Funktionslehre".
"I
have read the manuscript and think it is terrific - clear, precise and
logical..." (Dr. Gregory Hurworth, Monasch University, Melbourne Australia)
"The
most intensive and detailed book on harmonic theory for the English speaking
world that has appeared in recent times..." (Daniel Holloway, musician
and secondary educational teacher, Townsville Australia)
